Gachagua condemns police disruption in Subukia confrontation

By , July 20, 2025

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has condemned the use of police to break up a political meeting in Subukia, Nakuru County, terming the action illegal and undemocratic.

In a strongly worded statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, July 20, 2025, Gachagua accused the current administration of misusing law enforcement to suppress dissenting voices.

“The unconstitutional use of police force to intimidate leaders is archaic and a desperate act by a regime that is losing its grip,” he wrote.

“Leaders have a fundamental right to assemble, engage in public participation, and express their voices. Police officers are there to provide security, not to serve as tools of repression.”

Event disrupted briefly

The meeting, organised by Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) lawmakers and grassroots allies of Gachagua, was briefly interrupted when police officers ordered attendees to disperse.

Leaders and residents present protested the action, insisting the meeting was peaceful and within their constitutional rights.

While the motive for the police presence remains unclear, Gachagua suggested it was a calculated move to frustrate growing support for his political base.

Still standing firm

“I am truly thrilled that, despite these acts of intimidation, our members’ resilience remains unmatched. We continue to stand strong, united, and determined,” he said.

Gachagua is currently in the United States on a political and diaspora mobilisation tour, rallying support for what insiders describe as a potential new political formation ahead of the 2027 general election.

The Subukia incident adds to signs of internal friction within the ruling coalition, with tensions flaring between the police and DCP-aligned MPs backing Gachagua.

The National Police Service has yet to issue an official statement on the disruption. However, opposition figures have also raised concerns over increasing police crackdowns on public meetings, warning of democratic backsliding.
