Four police officers stationed in Mauche and Nakuru town areas have been interdicted for breaking limbs of three residents during curfew enforcement on Wednesday, Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Marcus Ochola.
Addressing media at the regional offices, Ochola said that the officers were under strict instructions to ensure that those who defy the curfew were arrested and taken through the legal process.
“Our officers are adequately briefed on the work they need to do before going out for the exercise but the incidences are regrettable,” Ochola said.
He said that they have already received six cases of police excesses in the county and are still reviewing two others.
Further, Ochila said that among those affected are the Likia OCS and OCPP Mauche. The duo was linked to an incident in which a man sustained broken limbs.
“I visited the victims in the hospital and established that they were truly assaulted and after investigations, I can say that our officers were involved,” he added.
The regional police boss said that they arrested 29 people and impounded 33 vehicles across the region on Wednesday night.
“We are bound by law and as such our cardinal principle is to treat the people with decorum even as we ensure they follow the law,” he said.
Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya implored security officers to be human during their operation, saying that many people already fear the viral disease.
Natembeya said that some of the officers will be arraigned in court over excessive use of force.
However, he called on the locals to obey the curfew.
