The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has disbanded all Flying Squad sub-units in the country except for the one based at the Nairobi headquarters.

“With effect from today, the Unit has equally been disbanded. This marks the end of the Flying Squad Unit and no officer will present himself or herself to the public as such,” said a statement from the DCI.

In the place of the disbanded Flying Squad, a new unit has been formed and named Sting Squad Headquarters (SSH).

The SSH will have a maximum of 50 specialised officers who respond to armed robberies, kidnappings, motor vehicle theft, sale and distribution of contraband and substandard goods.

The new SSH officers will undertake special courses to improve their competency.

The Special Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU) has also been scaled down to a smaller unit that will be based at the Nairobi headquarters.

The special crimes unit has also been renamed Special Service Unit (SSU).

The police said officers deployed in the new SSU have undergone intense training, locally and abroad to enhance their skills and knowledge.

“Both Squads (SSU) and (SSH) will be linked directly to the Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) for intelligence driven operations alongside other augmenting Units including; Cybercrime, Ballistics, Scenes of Crime, Principal Crime Registrar, Crime Intelligence Unit, Homicide, (DNA, Toxicological, Chemistry and Biology Lab Units), currently being installed in the Ultra-Modern Forensic Laboratory,” said the statement from police.
