The family of suspected terrorist Mohammed Salim who is being held in the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) over claims, of beheading a Congolese soldier has threatened to sue the government.
Salim’s family through lawyer Yusuf Abubakar has now revealed that although the government is in a position to negotiate with the Congolese government to extradite Salim back to the country, to face charges being levelled against him within the local judicial system, the government has failed to initiate the process.
“We have visited the ministry of foreign affairs in Nairobi and we have written to them seeking to have Salim brought back to the country. It’s the role of the government to ensure its citizens are tried within its legal system,” he said
Abubakar said Salim’s family will be moving to court on Thursday, seeking orders to compel the government to convince Congo to hand over the fugitive to the Antiterror police unit through Interpol.
He said following his arrest on January 29 this year his whereabouts remain unknown.
He, however, revealed that his family is aware that he is being held incommunicado by the Armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo(FARDC).
“If our government is unable to influence a country like Congo to hand over a Kenyan national to undergo trial through our judicial system, what happens to Kenyans being held in other countries,” Abubakar posed.
Salim went missing following his release on a Ksh2 million bond by Mombasa resident Magistrate Rita Amwayi.
Salim who has Kshs 10 million worth of bounty on his head came to the limelight in January this year after he was recorded beheading a soldier.
During the time of his arrest in Congo, he was working for the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) after travelling from Uganda, to Zimbabwe and then sneaking to Congo.
Salim is facing various terrorism charges at, Kwale and Mombasa law courts.
