Controversial former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa is in the eye of the storm again this time for slapping a polling clerk in the Matungu Constituency by-election.

In the video recorded on Thursday morning, March 4, the visibly angry Echesa confronted an election official, demanding to know why his party’s polling agents were allegedly chased out of a voting centre.

“You were told by who? Our agents are outside the polling centre. You cannot keep our agents outside. Why are you chasing them outside?” Echesa demands to knows and then plants a slap on the polling official.

The incident happened at Bulonga Primary School, where voting for the Matungu parliamentary seat was ongoing.

Echesa was angered that Peter Okura, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission representative, stopped one of United Democratic Alliance’s agents from entering the polling venue because he (the agent) had not met the pre-requisite criteria to access the venue.

According to Okura, he did not allow the agent in because he had “refused to wear a facemask.”

Echesa is one of the local politicians supporting UDA candidate in the Matungu parliamentary race, Alex Lanya.

Other candidates in the Matungu by-election are David Were of ODM and Peter Nabulindo of Amani National Congress (ANC).

The Matungu MP seat fell vacant following the death of holder Justus Murunga on November 14, 2020.

Nakuru chaos

Chaos also rocked the London Ward by-election on Thursday morning after Lang’ata MP Nixon Korir was chased away from a polling station over alleged voter bribery.
