Esther Passaris demands action after murder of 13-year-old girl in Homa Bay

Nairobi County Woman Representative Esther Passaris has strongly condemned the brutal killing of 13-year-old Mary Treza in Suba North, Homa Bay, describing the tragedy as a national emergency.

The legislator said the attack reflects a deepening crisis of gender-based violence in Kenya, one that requires urgent and decisive government action.

Passaris stressed that no child should have to live in fear of rape and murder, adding that the case should serve as a turning point in how Kenya addresses femicide.

She pointed to recent statistics showing that between January and March 2025 alone, 129 women were killed in femicide cases. According to her, these are not just numbers but lives cut short—daughters, sisters, and mothers robbed of their future simply because of their gender.

“The brutal killing of 13-year-old Mary Treza is not just a family tragedy; it is a national emergency. This must be a turning point: no more victim-blaming. No more impunity. No more silence,” Passaris said on X on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

Zero tolerance on femicide

Passaris urged authorities to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to gender-based violence and femicide. She noted that Kenya must move beyond rhetoric and commit to concrete measures that ensure justice for victims and protection for potential survivors.

“Every girl deserves to live free from fear, with dignity and hope for her future. Justice for Mary is justice for all women and girls in Kenya,” she added.

Her remarks align with a statement from UN Women Kenya, which also condemned the killing. The organisation described the rape and murder of the teenager as horrific and a stark reminder of the urgent crisis the country is facing.

In a statement shared on social media, UN Women Kenya said:

“We condemn in the strongest terms the brutal rape and murder of 13-year-old Mary Treza in Homa Bay. This horrific femicide is a stark reminder of Kenya’s urgent crisis: 129 women killed in Jan–Mar 2025 alone. Justice must be swift.”

The growing calls for accountability come as pressure mounts on law enforcement to not only deliver justice in the case of Mary Treza but also to implement measures that protect women and girls nationwide.
