The Government announced on Friday, August 16, that there will be no national tests at Grade 6, which is an equivalent of Class Eight in the current 8-4-4 system.
In the current system, all Class Eight pupils are required to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in a bid to transit from primary to secondary schools.
In the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) system, which Kenya is set to adopt nationally, Grade 6 pupils will transit to secondary schools without sitting for a national examination.
This, President Uhuru Kenyatta says, will help ensure there is 100 per cent transition from the lower level of education to the upper.
Lower secondary education, as per the 2-6-3-3-3 CBC system, begins at Grade 7, and ends at Grade 9.
Upper secondary education starts at Grade 10 and ends at Grade 12.
Three-year university education follows, thereafter.
President Kenyatta on Friday, August 16, presided over the National Education Reforms Conference at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
The event was attended by, among others, Education minister Prof. George Magoha and Teachers’ Service Commission CEO, Nancy Macharia.
In her address, Macharia said beginning Monday, August 19, TSC will train 1, 000 teachers across the country on the CBC system.
Macharia said more teachers will be trained in December, 2019.
The TSC boss says preparations to train teachers for Grade 5 are underway.
“The training is set to begin in January, 2020,” she said.
