Egerton University closed indefinitely, students given 24 hours to leave

Egerton University has become the latest university to suspend learning and send students home following the strike that has persisted for the past two months.

In a communication to the students on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the university noted that the strike has heavily affected the normalcy of university activities.

“The university senate at its 580th meeting held on 4th November 2025 has resolved that teaching and learning activities be formally suspended until the industrial dispute is resolved,” read the statement.

The university directed the students to vacate the university premises by 2 pm on Wednesday, 5th November 2025.

However, it said that the decision does not affect the medical and law students, international students, as well as the postgraduate students.

They have not indicated to the students the resumption of normal learning and assured them that the communication will be done once the stalemate has been addressed.

The decision comes hot on the heels of the hard stance taken by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) for a one-off payment of their dues amounting to Ksh 7.9 billion.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has called on the striking unions to accept payment of the dues in two tranches to allow faster resolution of the industrial action and resumption of learning.

The suspension at Egerton University follows days after the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology indefinitely halted academic activities and ordered most students to vacate its campuses due to an ongoing staff strike.

Both universities are affected by industrial action from the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), which has disrupted learning and essential services across public universities, though exemptions apply for medical, postgraduate, and other essential students.
