Coach Evelyne Kedogo guided her Eagle Wings side to a 53-41 victory over Western Delight away in Kakamega as they picked their seventh win in 15 matches of this season’s Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s league.
The win, which came at the back of two losses to Storms and Strathmore, moves Kedogo’s charges closer to qualifying for this season’s playoffs.
The Shauri Moyo-based side started the match on a high, taking the lead at 15-11 and played for a similar score line to head to the breather with an eight-point lead.
The hosts mounted an unsuccessful comeback in the second half but came short by one point in both quarters as they ended 11-10 and 12-11 in favour of the winners.
“We had anticipated a tough match and it was. I had travelled with very few players and missed key players but our game plan worked. We planned to be in the lead in the first quarter as that would ease the pressure in the second half and I am happy for the win,” said the coach-cum-player.
Delight, who have managed just one win this season and are facing the axe from the premier league, had a tough weekend at home as Storm had subjected them to a 53-44 loss on Saturday before their loss to Kedogo’s charges.
Coach Abel Nson had travelled to Kakamega with seven players but they took charge of the match leading from the first whistle 16-8 and 14-4 for a 18 point lead into the break. Delight won the second half in quarters of 14-11 and 18-12 but it was too little too late to manage a win against Nson’s side.
Meanwhile, leaders Equity Bank Hawks beat Africa Nazarene University (ANU) 70-40 for their 14th victory this season in 15 matches, taking their point tally to 29. This was ANU’s 10th loss in 14 matches.
The bankers played a slow first quarter to take a one point lead at 15-14 but had a better show in the second and third periods winning 18-6 and 22-10. The final quarter saw the students up their game to score 13 points against the defending champions’ 16.
