Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has shared details of a stalled health facility in Uasin Gishu County, which cost the government at least Ksh800 million.

In a statement shared in his official X account on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Duale announced that the health facility, which he identified as Ziwa Sirikwa Sub-County Hospital, has long been stalled.

According to the Health CS, who visited the Ziwa Sirikwa Sub-County Hospital, it has further been revealed that the hospital is now being upgraded to a Level 5 facility at a cost of Ksh 800 million.

“As part of my County-to-County Social Health Authority (SHA) activation tour, I also inspected the long-stalled Ziwa Sirikwa Sub-County Hospital, which is being upgraded to a Level 5 facility at a cost of KSh 800 million,” Duale said.

Stalled hospital taken over by KDF

The stalled Ziwa health facility follows a similar incident where the Kenya Defence Forces announced it will be involved in the completion of the stalled Ksh6.2 billion Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula said the national government had agreed to put in Ksh500 million and the county government another Ksh300 million for the completion and equipping of the first phase of the facility.

“It’s a government-to-government collaborative framework where the military will bring in engineers while the county government and the contractor will coordinate the technical team. The hospital will be complete and operational in the next eight months,” Savula said.

A technical team from KDF, led by Lt Col Joash Mommanyi, inspected the hospital site.

At the time, the team was expected to compile and forward a detailed report to President William Ruto to inform the next phase of the project.

Once operational, the facility is expected to ease congestion in regional hospitals, strengthen emergency services, enhance medical research and create job opportunities for professionals and residents.

Savula said negotiation for the involvement of the military in the completion of the hospital was done by Governor Fernandes Barasa and Defence CS Soipan Tuya.
