President William Ruto and Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a high-level meeting in Cairo on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, to discuss a range of issues aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and advancing regional peace.
Ruto later revealed key details of the discussions in a statement shared on social media, shedding light on the agreements signed and the strategic initiatives launched during the visit.
A highlight of the meeting was the signing of the Joint Declaration for a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership, which both leaders affirmed would solidify the relationship between their two nations.
Ruto described the partnership as a significant step forward, noting that it would enhance cooperation in a variety of sectors.
“Kenya and Egypt have signed the Joint Declaration for a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership. By appending my and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s signatures, we have elevated our relationship and strengthened our ties to boost our engagements in various fields,” Ruto wrote on X, the social media platform.
He continued, emphasizing that the agreement would open new avenues for collaboration, with 12 additional agreements focused on trade, investment, education, research, and technology exchanges.
These initiatives, according to Ruto, are expected to unlock substantial opportunities for both nations.
The leaders also took time to address pressing regional security concerns, particularly the ongoing conflicts in Sudan, Somalia, and the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ruto highlighted the urgent need for collaborative action to end the violence that has caused loss of life, displacement, and destruction across the continent.
“Conflicts in Africa have led to loss of lives, displacement of people, and destruction of property and livelihoods. On this account, it is urgent that we work together to bring an end to these clashes, silence the guns and bring back peace and stability — especially in Sudan, Somalia and the Eastern DRC — for the continent’s sustainable development,” Ruto said in a follow-up post.
The leaders expressed mutual gratitude for each other’s efforts in promoting peace and stability.
Ruto specifically thanked El-Sisi for his pivotal role in peace efforts in Somalia, Sudan, and the Middle East.
The visit culminated in a joint press conference at the Headquarters of the Presidency in Cairo, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties and addressing the challenges facing Africa and the broader region.
The meeting between Ruto and El-Sisi signals a new phase of cooperation between Kenya and Egypt, with both countries seeking to leverage their partnership to foster economic growth, technological innovation, and long-term peace in the region.
