A deputy headmaster is among five suspects who have been arrested by detectives for poaching.

The five suspects were found in possession of two elephant tusks weighing 18kg on Saturday as they sought potential buyers in Kajiado town.

A joint team of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) pounced on the poachers in Kajiado County.

Their arrest comes barely a month after an elephant was found killed by suspected poachers at Emotoroki area in Kajiado County.

At the time of the arrest, the suspects were using a Toyota Probox owned by the deputy headteacher, Nelson Wuantai Njiraini.

The other suspects were identified as Samson Ntinga, Francis Lakati Ngarua, Dickson Kirinkol and Emmanuel Kantet Swankei.

All suspects have been put in custody pending arraignment.
