The number of COVID-19 cases in Kenya crossed the 8,000-mark on Monday, the same day President Uhuru Kenyatta lifted partial lockdowns in Nairobi, Mombasa and Mandera counties.

According to the Ministry of Health’s report on July 7, 181 more people tested positive for the virus, bring to 8,067 total infections in the country.

“Our cumulative samples tested so far now stands at 191,394,” said Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe in the statement to newsrooms.

Of the new cases, 179 are Kenyans while two are foreigners.

The ministry said that the youngest to contract the virus is a four-month-old infant.

Nairobi still leads with 134 followed by Kiambu (19), Mombasa (9), Kajiado (6), Machakos (6), Lamu (3), Murang’a (2), Uasin Gishu (1) and Kirinyaga (1).

On a positive note, 127 people were discharged from various hospitals bringing to 2,4414 the total number of recoveries.

However, the death toll rose to 164 after four patients died of the virus.

“Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the departed,” said CS Kagwe.
