High Court Judge James Makau has on Wednesday, December 4, temporarily stopped implementation of new Nairobi County parking fees.
This follows an application by Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek) who claimed that County Parking Services Director, Tom Tinega, has no authority to set timelines for commencement of Nairobi County Financial Act 2019.
Motorists were set to pay Sh400 to park in the Nairobi Central Business District and Kijabe Street starting on Wednesday.
Cofek contested the new parking fees, arguing that doubling of fee from Sh200 to Sh400 is unlawful and discriminatory since they have lowered parking fees in other areas outside CBD.
The consumer protection body claimed Nairobi County’s decision to raise matatu parking fee to Sh 100 will lead to an increase bus fare, hitting commuters especially those travelling up country for the holiday season.
The High Court set the case hearing on January 21.
