A Standard Two pupil is dead and two other children injured after they were ambushed by armed cattle rustlers near Marti town in Samburu County.

The armed bandits attacked the children while they were herding their families livestock and made way with over 250 goats on Saturday afternoon, July 18.

During the ambush, the bandits shot at the children killing one on the spot. The two who were injured were shot from behind while running away from the cattle rustler.

They were taken to Marti Dispensary for first-aid and then transferred to Maralal Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

Locals said that the deadly attack occurred about 300m from the Marti Police Station and General Service Unit camp but the security officers never responded.

Some of the locals said that senior police officers were off duty hence there was no one to give an order to pursue the armed cattle rustlers.

Samburu North Sub-County Police Commander Tom Makori refused to comment on the incident.

Locals suspect the attackers came from the neighbouring county and have called on the government to speed up investigations and apprehend the culprits.
