A police informer who played a key role in the murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwendwa and a taxi driver, revealed the chilling details of how they killed the trio.

The court heard, through a 21-page written confession, how the four police officers vengefully planned and carried out the brutal murders.

The statement by Peter Ngugi was read out by Chief Inspector Geoffrey Kinyua.

“The first victim who was the main target (Mwendwa) was killed using a rope and a polythene bag. His body was stashed in a sack and put in a boot. At around 11pm, the second victim was taken to a different corner and killed in the same style. After he died he was put in two sacks because he was tall and couldn’t fit in one sack. His body was taken to the boot. The third one was strangled to death using a rope and polythene bag,” the court heard.

The statement was being read out to Justice Jessie Lessit and revealed that Sergeant Fredrick Leliman planned the murders in a vengeful vendetta against Mwendwa for having filed a complaint against him at the Independent Police Oversight Authority (Ipoa) and the International Justice Mission.

Mwendwa was aggrieved after Leliman shot him in the leg.

The police informer, in his statement, said that they argued for more than three hours on how to kill their victims who by them were handcuffed and stashed in a car boot.

The informer said some of them wanted to release the victims since they had been exposed after one of the victim called their spouse to inform them that they had been taken to Syokimau AP Post.

But Ngugi said Leliman was determined that the three must die.

The informant said that his role was to give the victims to Sergeant Mwangi, who then took them to Leliman and Kamenju (believed to be Stephen Cheburet) who would then strangle them.

After they were strangled to death, the bodies were then placed one-by-one into the car boot.

The four police officers who have been charged with the brutal murders orchestrated in 2016 are: Leliman, Cheburet, Sylvia Mwangi and Leonard Maina Mwangi.
