Cherargei claims Gachagua’s camp has gone silent since IEBC reconstitution

By , July 31, 2025

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has publicly claimed that, following the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), leaders of the United Opposition have become noticeably quiet.

Cherargei, speaking during an interview with a local media station on Wednesday night, July 30, 2025, said that a section of the leaders from the opposition have retreated from public engagement, attributing their absence to their inability to challenge the revamped electoral body.

He further said that some key opposition figures are now in the United States of America.

“Since IEBC was reconstituted, all of President Ruto’s opponents have gone silent and are in hiding in the United States of America,” Cherargei claimed.

IEBC reconstitution

The reconstitution of the IEBC has been a highly charged political issue. Cherargei’s remarks suggest that it has effectively neutralised key opposition voices, at least publicly.

By implying that some opponents are now in the U.S., Cherargei is portraying their absence as deliberate avoidance rather than strategic silence.

The amended IEBC Bill was signed into law by President William Ruto on July 9, 2024, triggering a process to reconstitute the commission.

The new IEBC Chairperson and six commissioners were sworn in on July 15, 2025, restoring the electoral body’s full legal authority and mandating it to oversee electoral preparations for 202.

Opposition leaders in US

Cherargei’s claims come as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i are currently in the US.

Gachagua has been engaged in outreach with Kenyans in the diaspora, and during his visit, he held a private tête‑à‑tête meeting with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i in Aberdeen, Maryland.

The two discussed several national issues affecting Kenya and potential strategies moving forward.

“During my visit to the USA, I had a tete-a-tete with Dr. Fred Matiangi at Aberdeen, Maryland,” Gachagua revealed.

“We discussed several issues affecting our country, Kenya, and our liberation cause. Our focus remains strong, and our commitment to the people of Kenya is unwavering. God bless Kenya.”

On the other hand, Kalonzo disclosed that his trip to the US is aimed at making a proper plan for Kenyans ahead of the 2027 polls, in which he said top in the agenda will be to unseat President William Ruto.

“I’m currently out of the country for strategic planning for a better Kenya. I will make my plan for Kenya for Kenyans to review, not Ruto.Agenda No. 1 is #RutoMustGo,” he stated.
