A businessman based at Tingare in Ugunja sub-county was critically injured when criminals shot at him before robbing him of over Sh400,000.

Confirming the incident, Siaya County Police Commander Francis Kooli said that the businessman, Ambrose Olale Okoyo, had left the bank and was apparently trailed by the gangsters.

“The businessman, 57, had withdrawn Sh400,000 from a Cooperative Bank in Siaya and carried the money in a laptop bag on his back while riding his motorcycle,” said the police boss.

Eyewitnesses said the businessman was cornered at the Rambula junction, on Ugunja–Sigomere–Mumias Road by the robbers who were driving in a white saloon car.

They said the gangsters shot Okoyo, sending him sprawling on the ground, then snatched the bag and disappeared towards Rambula.

Kooli said the trader was shot thrice, with one bullet injuring the hips.

“He was rushed to St. James hospital in Ugunja and later transferred to Siaya County Referral Hospital,” he said.

The police boss said that the motorcycle the trader was riding, registration number KMEB 375H, was recovered adding police officers combed the scene for any spent cartridges but none was recovered.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 28.
