Former US President Barack Obama has announced his endorsement of Joe Biden for president in a video message published on Twitter.

He said Mr. Biden, who was his vice-president, could unify and “heal” a nation struggling through some of its darkest moments.

“Choosing Joe as my vice-president was the best decision I ever made and he became a close friend. And I believe Joe has all the qualities we need in a president right now. He’s someone whose own life has taught him how to persevere, how to bounce back when you’ve been knocked down,” said Mr. Obama.

On Tuesday, Bernie Sanders endorsed Mr. Biden for the Democratic Party nomination after quitting his race for the White House last week.
