An assistant chief in Bungoma County has been arrested after being found with a form two girl in a guest house in Mt Elgon, Trans Nzoia County.
The Assistant Chief identified as James Kabunjey, who is in charge of Sasur Sub Location, was on Monday evening caught with a Form 2 student of Toroso Secondary School at Kikwetu lodging in Cheptais town.
This is after the owner of the lodging raised alarm forcing members of the public to storm the facility, and eject the administrator and the girl.
Police from Cheptais Police Station arrived on time and saved the suspect from public lynching.
Confirming the arrest of the chief, Mt Elgon sub-county police commander Stephen Muoni said they received information on the incident around 2pm.
They rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect together with the young girl.
Mr Muoni said they interrogated the two and it was established that the male adult was an assistant chief of Sasur sublocation.
“We have begun a probe into the incident and once we are done we shall arraign the suspect in court”, he said.
He said it was highly suspected that the chief was having a love affair with the form two girl.
“I want to warn members of the public who are preying on our young school-going girls that their days are numbered and we shall arrest them and jail them,” he said.
Cheptais sub county children’s officer Henry Bigoro said they have picked up the matter and will ensure justice prevails.
“We have had the culprit arrested and medical reports have shown that a sexual act was done,” he said.
He said that he was only waiting for the birth certificate of the minor to a ascertain age
Bungoma county has been on the spot over the increased cases of teen pregnancy that has contributed to the low performance in exams.
