Students from Siaya county, who were allegedly caught engaging in exams malpractices, have been detained at Siaya police station.

More than 40 KCSE candidates from Dibuoro Secondary school in Alego/Usonga sub-county together with nine other people are in police custody after they were arrested over alleged involvement in exam malpractice.

The 42 students, their principal, Chemistry teacher, two laboratory technicians, the supervisor and five invigilators were taken to the Siaya police station to record a statement after it was realized that was a leakage of the Chemistry practical paper that was being done on Friday March 18.

According to Alego/Usonga Sub-County Police Commander Benedict Mwangangi, some 20 candidates were found while in possession of four mobile phones which had some leakage of the Chemistry paper that they were going to sit.

The police boss said that upon scrutiny of the phones, it was discovered that they also had a leakage of the Kiswahili paper which was done on Thursday.

“We have deteaned 51 people including students who were allegedly caught engauging in exams malpractices at Diburo school in Usonga,” Mwangangi said adding that they are being investigated before being arrained in court.

Mwangangi stated that the phone had a WhatsApp group with 42 students from that school as members, a reason that forced them to look for the other 20 members to also accompany the first 22 to record a statement at the police station.

“We had cornered some 22 whom we established were notorious and detailed reports made us trace other 20 students who were equally members of the WhatsApp group,” he added.

While confirming the incident, Siaya sub-county Deputy County Commissioner Enock Nyarango stated that even though the key suspect in that syndicate is still at large, they picked seven others including the school principal and the chemistry teacher to also record a statement with the police.

Nyarango stated that the students will spend the weekend in police custody as investigations into the matter begin and search to arrest and prosecute the key suspect continues.

“The students and their accomplices will be our property over weekend where they shalla be subjected to thorough investigations,” Nyarango said.
