Police on Monday night shot and killed three suspected gangsters in Mathare slums, Nairobi County, and recovered one firearm.

The unidentified suspected robbers are believed to have been behind a series of robberies within the slum.

An officer privy to the matter said that the robbers had snatched the gun from a police officer on October 6, 2020.

“They had snatched the firearm from a police officer a month ago when officers were attacked within Mathare,” the officer said.

Locals living near the rental house that was raided by plainclothes officers told K24 Digital that they were woken up by loud gun-shots as police engaged the suspects.

Maurice Otieno said that the officers engaged the robbers for over an hour before they finally overpowered them.

“It was hard for us to even sleep as the police engaged the gangsters. We were shocked to learn that the three were robbers,” he said.

Another local, Abel Wanjala, said that he was on Tuesday morning shocked to see people gather around a flat within the slum only to learn that three robbers had been shot and killed.

Rashid Yakubu, the Nairobi County police boss, told K24 Digital on phone that the three have been harassing locals using the firearm.

“The police managed to recover the forearm plus nine rounds of ammunition from the three gangsters,” he said.
