Three policemen, all based in Wajir County, were on Wednesday arrested while transporting 245kg of bhang, counterfeit cigarettes and charcoal.

The policemen were arrested near Kanyoonyoo market on the Garissa-Thika highway by a multi-agency team.

Police said the trio were transporting the goods aboard a Toyota Landcruiser bearing a fake number plate that belongs to DCIO Wajir.

The arresting team also seized Sh239, 500 from the Wajir policemen which they claimed the suspects intended to use as bribes.

“The said vehicle was being driven by police constable Japhet Fondo Kahindi, and on board were police constable Bob Otieno Owino of DCI Wajir and Administration Police constable Michael N Mwangi of Buna Post in Wajir,” said the police report.

The Toyota Land Cruiser was also ferrying six bags of rice each weighing 50kg, two 50kg bags of branded GOK rice, beans, brown sugar, contraband milk powder and packets of soap.

Police also arrested a civilian whom they claimed was on standby to receive the goods from the Wajir policemen.
