A family from Githagara village in Kahuro sub-county in Kiharu, Muranga County, mourns the death of their two children, who died after a fire destroyed their house.

According to the mother of the children, Scholastica Wanjiru, the incident occurred on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, when she had gone to buy milk at the local shopping centre.

Speaking at Murang’a County mortuary, the mother suspected foul play and called on the police to conduct thorough investigations to establish the cause of the raging inferno.

According to Wanjiru, the incident was nothing that could have ignited a fire in the house, as she had cooked enough food during the day for both lunch and dinner using a jiko, whose fire she extinguished after the exercise.

“I was attracted by screams from people who were battling the flames that consumed my rented house. My daughter’s body was retrieved from the ruins of the house, while my son, who sustained serious burns, was rushed to Muriranjas Level 4 Hospital,” Scolastica said.

One of the children, identified as Shantel Wangari, aged 2, succumbed to severe burns during the fire incident. In contrast, the second child, Eric Muturi, was pronounced dead after arrival seven hours later at the Kenyatta National Hospital, where he had been transferred for specialised treatment.

“He was then transferred to Murang’a Level 5 Hospital and later to Kenyatta National Hospital, but unfortunately, he did not make it,” she tearfully explained.

Molo fire incident

The incident closely follows a similar incident in Kapsita village of Molo Sub-County, where a Junior Secondary School teacher succumbed in a late-night house fire.

The deceased, who was identified as Abel Moseti, was burnt beyond recognition after a fierce inferno engulfed his house last night.

The fire, which broke out at around 1:00 am on October 1, 2025, is now under investigation by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) in Molo.

Moseti was recently employed by the government and sent to Chesingele Junior Secondary, where he has been teaching until his tragic demise.

According to his distressed father, Robert Bichang’a, the loss is both overwhelming and shocking.

“He was obedient, hard-working and caring. I felt like I was in a terrible dream when I saw heavy smoke and fire coming out of his house,” said the father of six while holding back his tears.

A local resident who rushed to the scene described the fire as intense, adding that it spread quickly, making it difficult to rescue the young teacher.

“We tried to break into the house to save him, but a gas cylinder exploded, forcing us to run for safety. Nothing was salvaged from the fire,” Joshua Arama added.
