Githuguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wa Muchomba has applauded young ladies who took part in the protest against the Finance Bill 2024 on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
Speaking during an interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Wamuchomba said that she is impressed with the young ladies who took to the streets to exercise their constitutional rights.
“Congratulations to the young girls I saw on the streets yesterday. Girls keep it up,” Wamuchomba said.
Singling out the girls who impressed her, Wamuchomba disclosed that she was looking for the young girl who told Azimio leader Raila Odinga during the protest to stay at home adding she was also aroused by the Akorino model Carey Priscilla after she carried a placard protesting against taxation of the sanitary pads.
“I am looking for that girl the one who was telling Angwambo kaa nyumbani (stay at home). I am looking for that girl and there were so many young girls on the streets yesterday. I saw one pregnant holding a placard and she was talking about sanitary towels. She was saying ‘kwani hatutanyesha tena? Hamutaki tunyeshe? Na huyu mtoto nimebeba nikizaa atatumia diapers gani?’,” she said.
Wamuchomba further said that the young generation has caught up fast and that it is impressive.
Wamuchomba on a finance bill
Commenting on the proposed taxes, Wamuchomba said that Kenyans should not be taxed without giving them space to generate what the government is going to tax.
“You cannot tax Kenyans without giving them breathing space for them to generate what you are going to come and tax,” Wamuchomba said.
She says that as an economics scholar, the law of the Laffer curve dictates that the certain extent of diminishing returns should be gradual.
“Mimi nimesoma economics na kuna kitu huwa tunatumia kwa economics inatitwa the Laffer Curve. Laffer Curve dictates that there is a certain extent of diminishing returns that you must not reach yani ukianza kutax tax pole pole kama una increase progressively,” she said
Asking the current government to emulate the late President Mwai Kibaki, Wamuchomba said that when Kibaki was elected, he gave business owners two years to generate income before they started to pay taxes.
“When Kibaki came in, the first thing he did was saying ‘I’m going to give you two years everybody in business fanyeni biashara after two years tupatane pale kwa tax’,” she said.
