Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has shared that he was visibly moved as Kanze Dena appeared on live television, with a file of evidence on former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s retirement benefits.

Sifuna highlighted that the move to table a file of evidence during a live TV interview made by Kanze on Monday, June 10, 2024, was impressive.

“Kanze Dena went to Citizen TV with an entire box file bwana, I’m impressed,” Sifuna noted.

Kanze’s appearance on national television comes moments after she made a press briefing sharing the plight that has befallen retired president Uhuru Kenyatta.

In a passionate defence of the retired president, Kanze Dena shed light on the unenacted Retirement Benefits Act that directly impacts the former president’s daily operations.

Presidential Benefit Act

It was revealed that despite parliament allocating Ksh655 million in the financial year 2022/2023, former president Kenyatta has been running his office, fuelling his vehicles, and paying the staff allowances from his personal funding.

It is the position of the office of the third retired President that the government of the day has not undertaken nor facilitated any repairs, maintenance of any vehicles under this office nor fueled any cars under this office,” Kanze added.

As expressed by Kanze Dena, the former president’s office categorically distanced itself from the budget that was tabled in parliament because they were not consulted and did not know where the budget was formulated.

A further revelation by Kanze was that out of the 34 employees who have salaries and allowances fully paid by the state, two, including Kanze, are still waiting for contract renewals.

Another key concern Kanze pointed out was Uhuru’s request for his office in Nyari. Despite government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura’s claim Dena said the State House made it clear that the office in Nyari should be the one Uhuru should occupy.

“The statement that the retired President enjoys a fully furnished and maintained office is incorrect. To date, the matter has never been resolved,” she said.

Kanze added that former president Mwai Kibaki chose to work in Nyari for himself, and as such, Uhuru was also entitled to choose an office that would suit him.

In his opinion, Mwaura said that the office allocated was suitable for any retired President.

“By rejecting this office and preferring that the government leases his own private home, the Third Retired President is inviting the government to violate procurement laws, regulations and procedures,” Mwaura added.
