Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi wants a mass funeral service for the slain anti-government protesters to be held on Thursday, July 4, 2024.
In a statement on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, Mwangi revealed that they are looking for a venue in Nairobi to hold a memorial service for the 39 protesters who succumbed to injuries inflicted through gunshots during the ongoing countrywide protests.
The activist further stated that the government’s interference with peaceful protests has led to many deaths and injuries.
“39. That’s the number of people murdered by the state during the protests that started peacefully before the government introduced goons and killer cops. Say their names,” Mwangi said.
“We are looking for a venue in Nairobi for a mass funeral service on Thursday. Suggestions are welcome.”

Fatalities and injuries
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), has revealed that 39 peaceful protesters have lost their lives and 361 were injured since the anti-government protests started on since the start of June 18, 2024, in several parts of the country.
In a report published on Monday, July 1, 2024, KNCHR stated that it has been at the forefront in monitoring compliance with human rights principles and standards in these demonstrations and calling for action from duty bearers.
“Fatalities and Injuries: Data from our records indicates that thirty-nine (39) people have died and three hundred and sixty-one (361) injured in relation to the protests countrywide,” KNCHR report reads.
“This is cumulative data from 18th June 2024 to 1 July 2024.”
According to the KNCHR report, Nairobi County recorded the highest number of deaths witnessed during the ongoing protests followed by Uasin Gishu, Mombasa, Nakuru and Kajiado County while the counties of Narok, Nandi and Kiambu recorded the lowest number of deaths.
KNCHR further indicated that postmortems for most of the victims are yet to be conducted.
“The dead are from Nairobi (17), Nakuru (3), Laikipia (1), Narok (1), Kajiado (3), Uasin Gishu (4), Kakamega (1), Kisumu (2), Kisii (1), Mombasa (3), Siaya (1), Kiambu (1) and Nandi (1). We condole with the families.,”
“Post-mortems for most of the victims are yet to be conducted.”
According to KNCHR, the Tuesday, June 25, 2024, demonstration turned chaotic resulting in several deaths, injuries and property damage.
