Salasya laments after his number is shared online

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, lamented after an unknown person shared his private number on the vibrant social media platform X formerly Twitter.

Through his official Instagram account, the youthful legislature questioned who shared his number since he has been receiving calls and text messages from unidentified numbers urging him to reject the Finance Bill.

The vocal MP further disclosed that he is unable to sleep since his phone has been vibrating throughout because of the messages and calls he is receiving.

“Who has shared my number on X everybody across the nation is calling my number, texting me, and WhatsApping me,” he said.

“I can’t sleep the phone is vibrating throughout ati I reject the finance bill.”

Salasya went ahead to reveal that some netizens have been sending him money as low as Ksh1 via Mpesa to confirm if the number belongs to him.

To bring the public up to speed about the proposed Finance Bill 2024 and what will be happening in the parliament, the legislature said the Members of Parliament will not be voting for the bill on Thursday, June 13, 2024,  but the Cabinet Secretary for Treasury will read the budget.

Wananitumia shilingi moja kwa mpesa (they are sending money via Mpesa Ksh1) to confirm if it’s me. We are not voting tomorrow(Thursday, June 13, 2024),” he said.

Proposed Finance Bill 2024

Kenyans have continued to urge Members of the Parliament to reject the proposed Finance Bill ahead of the budget reading on Thursday, June 13, 2024.

Many have expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed bill which outlines how revenues will be collected and additional tax on the basic commodities.

According to the parliament website, the Finance Bill 2024 which seeks to raise Ksh302 billion worth of additional tax revenue in the 2024/25 financial year has proposed an increase in revenue collection.

The proposed revenue raising includes, liability to and collection of taxes and amends the Income Tax Act, the Value Added Tax Act, the Excise Duty Act, the Miscellaneous Fees and Levies Act and the Tax Procedures Act.

Also proposed in the revenue collection are, the Public Finance Management Act, the Kenya Revenue Authority Act, the Affordable Housing Act, the Industrial Training Act, and the Data Protection Act.
