Salasya declares his stand on Finance Bill ahead of Tuesday vote

Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has bowed to pressure from Kenyans concerning the proposed Finance Bill 2024.

The youthful legislature through his official social media page, disclosed that he has read every clause on the proposed Finance Bill and he has made the decision to join the majority of Kenyans in rejecting the Bill which will be tabled before the parliament for voting on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

“I can now dance ndombolo ya solo after reading clause after clause on the finance bill and indeed I join the rest of Kenyans in rejecting the finance bill officially,” he said.

Echoing what President William Ruto told them about their job description as legislators, Salasya further stated that as an MP his mandate is to oversight, represent and legislate adding that he will perform his duties on the voting day.

” I remember the president telling us last week kazi ya mbunge ni tatu (an MP has three responsibilities) to legislate, represent and oversight na sharti sasa tufanye hii sasa (we must perform our duties) on Tuesday,” he said.

Rejecting Finance Bill

The Mumias East MP further promised Kenyans that there would be no discussion on the Finance Bill in Parliament but instead, it should be taken back to be amended.

“Since all Kenyans are against the finance bill and the voice of the people is the voice of God. I therefore at this 1:00 am take a position that we should not have any discussion on the finance bill but instead, it should be taken back to the people,” Salasya said.

Criticising the 2024/2025 Ksh4.02 trillion budget, Salasya said that as a country, the budget is much beyond our living standards

“We should live within our means budget of 4.02T is much beyond our living it’s high time someone listens with due respect ata kama zimeshika,” he said.

Salasya vs Kenyans

The vocal MP admitted that he will not go against the will of Kenyans since he isn’t ready to face the consequences levelled against him.

“Guys, I am not ready to be shaved by a bottle I will vote No Mia kwa Mia trust me please I beg 😢 Ground imechafuka hata hapa Mumias nikipiga yes mimi sirudi bunge please pray for me not to get sick that this week I be in the parliament throughout,” he said.

On June 12, 2024, Salasya came to lament after his private number was shared on social media platform X formerly Twitter and that he has been receiving calls and text messages from unidentified numbers urging him to reject the Finance Bill.

Salasya further disclosed that he is unable to sleep since his phone has been vibrating throughout because of the messages and calls he is receiving.

“Who has shared my number on X everybody across the nation is calling my number, texting me, and WhatsApp me,” he said.

“Wakenya wametuma shilingi moja moja hadi nimefikisha 40000 lakini message za matuzi mpunguze ati niki vote yes mutaninyoa rasta yangu hehe (Kenyans have sent me Ksh1 so far I have received Ksh 40,000 in total, however, some of you have sent me vulgar messages while other threatened to cause me bodily harm if I vote in favour of the Bill).”
