Kenya Red Cross dispatches ambulances to provide emergency medical response to anti-govt protesters

The Kenya Red Cross Society has dispatched six fully equipped ambulances to provide emergency medical response to the injured anti-government demonstrators.

Red Cross, on Thursday, June 27, 2024, revealed that the ambulances will be situated at the three temporary medical response centres located in Holy Family Basilica, All Saints Cathedral and Jamia Shopping Mall in Nairobi County.

“We have dispatched 6 fully equipped ambulances to provide emergency medical response at our 3 temporary standby locations in the Nairobi CBD (Holy Family Basilica, All Saints Cathedral and Jamia Shopping Mall), “Redcross said.

On June 26, 2024, the Red Cross was accused of using their ambulances to ferry unauthorised persons during protests in Nairobi however Red Cross denied the accusations.

“Emergency Plus Medical Services (E-Plus) clarifies that our mission was purely to offer emergency medical services to any person (s) in need of medical evacuation. We confirm that our ambulances were only used to evacuate injured persons in need of medical assistance,” the Red Cross said.

“During yesterday’s protests, we attended to over 150 casualties at our temporary triage stations in the Nairobi CBD and the entire country. A total of 50 critically injured persons were rushed to various hospitals for further treatment. E-Plus remains committed to delivering professional emergency medical services, ensuring the well-being and safety of all individuals.”

Emergency Care

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists (KMPDU) Secretary General Davji Atellah on June 25, 2024, disclosed that the medics will be providing free medical care to the injured protesters.

Davji stated that the free medical care is in solidarity with the peaceful protesters.

“As a trade union, we emphasize the importance of respecting the right to protest peacefully. We are providing FREE MEDICAL SERVICES to those injured by police during these demonstrations and a sound system to help amplify our voices as we join in solidarity with Kenyans across the country and globally,” Davji said.
