A section of protesters in Nyeri on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, raided Kieni Member of Parliament Njoroge Wainaina’s supermarket after he voted in favour of the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
In a video seen by K24 Digital, the protesters made their way into Chieni Supermarket and looted goodies including household items and food among others.
The angry residents also vandalised property including furniture and threw stones at the windows before starting a fire at the supermarket.
Anti-riot police officers hurriedly rushed to the scene and deployed teargas canisters to quell the disruptions. Firefighters shortly joined the officers to fight off the fire.
The protests gained momentum across different parts of the country including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kericho and Eldoret counties among others.
Earlier, a section of protesters overpowered, officers stormed parliament and vandalised property. MPs within the vicinity were forced to scamper for safety and fled through the underground tunnel, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi was evacuated in an ambulance.
Some protesters sought safety in nearby structures around Parliament Road, such as the Holy Family Basilica, while others engaged in running skirmishes with police officers.
Relentlessly, the demonstrators engaged in combat with police officers while yelling and singing their way through Nairobi’s streets.
Similar incidents were seen in the Laikipia County Assembly following a segment of protesters’ storming of the County chambers in opposition to the Finance Bill 2024.
After demonstrators gained entry to the building, broken glass was observed strewn around the assembly’s main foyer.
This followed after the Finance Bill 2024 passed the committee stage when 195 MPs voted in favour of it.
