Nairobi County Government has been carrying out demolition of structures on riparian land in Nairobi after President William Ruto ordered the exercise following the damage the floods had caused.
Nairobi demolitions
The ongoing demolitions are targeting buildings that are constructed on riparian land in Starehe Constituency within areas of Landimawe Ward, Nairobi South Ward, Gikomba and other areas in Nairobi City County, including City Carton in Embakasi West and Kariobangi South, Ruaraka, Mathare and other constituencies.
However, some of the buildings have been demolished partially, posing a great danger to the youth who normally flock such structures in search of scrap metals.
Partially demolished structures
On May 14, 2024, four casualties were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital after a building undergoing demolition collapsed in Mathare North Area 2.
Kenya Red Cross said three individuals had critical injuries while one person sustained minor injuries.
On May 10, 2024, two people lost their lives after a building collapsed at Kanduyi Market in Bungoma County.
The building had been partially demolished by the Bungoma County government to pave way for the expansion and renovation of the Masinde Muliro Stadium which hosted this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations.
The duo reportedly became trapped inside the building while attempting to collect scrap metal.
